What happens when Australia's top authority on Chinese traditional music, an accomplished exponent of the sheng, meets a well-travelled intercultural composer intent on exploring the latest electronic music gadgetry? Sheng Shen Shimmer is a concert event that expresses the coming together of cultures, of dissimilar musical genres, instruments, techniques, and most importantly, of two quite different musicians.
Wang Zheng-Ting has performed on the sheng (mouth organ) all around the world, and is a highly respected composer, ethnomusicologist and Director of the Australian Chinese Music Ensemble. Duncan Foster, as an instrumentalist and composer, has explored a plethora of musical genres including jazz, blues, East African (especially Ethiopian), Western 'art' music, popular wedding songs and Vietnamese contemporary opera, often working in dynamic intercultural settings. For this project he explores the collaborative potential of Ableton's Push 2 digital audio controller.
